Latin American regions implement mental health and suicide prevention initiatives

Various regions in Latin America are implementing diverse strategies to address mental health and suicide prevention.

In Río Grande, Argentina, the municipality has institutionalized the Municipal Mental Health Council to coordinate efforts between various institutions and security forces. This council aims to analyze local and regional data to improve prevention and care. Similarly, in Concepción del Uruguay, Argentina, the “Hablemos sobre suicidio” program is conducting workshops in schools to teach adolescents and families how to identify warning signs.

In Apure, Venezuela, the Insalud Apure Mental Health Program has launched sensitization workshops focused on early detection and family support to combat rising suicide rates. In Uruguay, officials in Lavalleja have called for stronger mental health protocols in public workplaces following a suicide involving a local official, emphasizing the importance of “posvention” or support for those affected by such losses.

In Mexico, the DIF Municipal de Jesús María has implemented the “Ponte mis lentes” campaign to raise awareness and foster empathy regarding mental health struggles.
