Turkey advances energy goals with Akkuyu nuclear start-up and new oil prospects

Turkey is advancing several major energy projects involving nuclear, oil, and natural gas. At the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev announced that the first reactor is on track for a physical start-up in the second half of December. The goal is to transition the unit from construction to the start-up phase by the end of the year. To support the ongoing multi-billion dollar project, Rosatom is actively seeking Turkish investors to acquire a 49 percent stake in Akkuyu Nuclear JSC.

In the fossil fuel sector, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar signaled that a new oil discovery may be announced from the Gabar region soon. He noted that daily production in Gabar has reached 84,000 barrels, with potential to exceed 100,000 barrels. Additionally, Turkey aims to significantly expand its domestic natural gas production in the Black Sea. Current production at the Sakarya Gas Field is approximately 7.5 billion cubic meters annually, with targets to double this capacity in the near term and quadruple it by 2028.
