Turkey energy infrastructure and nuclear expansion
Overview
Turkey is pursuing a multi-faceted strategy to expand its energy capacity through nuclear, oil, and natural gas developments. At the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Rosatom has indicated that the first reactor is scheduled for a physical start-up in the second half of December. To support the project, Rosatom is seeking Turkish investors to acquire a 49 percent stake in Akkuyu Nuclear JSC.
Looking toward long-term goals, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced at Russian Energy Week that Turkey aims to reach at least 20 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2050. This strategy includes the potential development of additional plants in Sinop and the Thrace region, utilizing both large traditional reactors and small modular reactors to meet rising electricity demand.
In the fossil fuel sector, Turkey is increasing domestic production. Daily oil production in the Gabar region has reached 84,000 barrels, with expectations to exceed 100,000 barrels. Additionally, the country seeks to expand natural gas production at the Sakarya Gas Field, with targets to double current capacity in the near term and quadruple it by 2028.
