Rose pruning guide for autumn maintenance

Autumn rose pruning should be restrained, focusing on maintenance rather than heavy cutting. The primary goal is to tidy the bushes before winter by removing dead, diseased, or damaged stems and thinning out branches that cross one another.

Addressing diseased parts is critical for preventing the overwintering of pathogens, such as the fungus responsible for black spot. It is recommended to collect and remove fallen, spotted leaves from beneath the bushes to prevent infection. Long, thin shoots should be shortened or secured to prevent wind damage.

When dealing with spent flowers, gardeners should be more cautious than in summer. For tea roses, regular deadheading should cease by mid-September to avoid encouraging new, tender growth that may not harden before frost. For all types, including shrub, mini, and groundcover roses, using clean, sharp pruning shears is essential to prevent plant damage and the spread of disease.
