Taranto Floods Prompt Calls for Infrastructure Upgrades Ahead of 2026 Mediterranean Games
Councilor Luca Lazzàro of Italy’s Brothers of Italy party warned that the recent flash flood in Taranto, dubbed a “water bomb”, has overwhelmed streets, stranded vehicles and toppled trees, highlighting the city’s chronic vulnerability to intense rain. He urged the municipal administration to disclose and accelerate structural measures – such as drainage upgrades, manhole maintenance and reinforcement of at‑risk road sections – before the city hosts the XX Mediterranean Games from 21 August to 3 September 2026. Lazzàro stressed that the Games will bring thousands of athletes and visitors, making reliable urban mobility and public‑safety systems essential. He called for transparent timelines and concrete actions to prevent a repeat of the current disruptions during the international event.
