Rotterdam residents protest military helicopter exercise
A large-scale military anti-terror exercise involving the Dutch Air Force has drawn significant criticism in Rotterdam after residents were woken by heavy helicopter noise in the early morning hours.
The exercise, which simulated a hostage rescue, utilized eight helicopters—including Chinook, Cougar, and Apache models—and involved heavily armed soldiers operating in urban areas such as Rotterdam-Zuid and IJsselmonde. While the Air Force defended the early start time, stating that practicing during twilight mimics the conditions of attacking an enemy while they are in deep sleep, residents reported being shaken awake by the noise.
By 08:30, 24 official noise complaints had been filed with the environmental service DCMR. In response, political parties SP and Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD) have submitted nine written questions to the municipal government. The parties are demanding clarity on why densely populated residential areas were chosen for training instead of less populated or industrial sites, and whether the impact of the noise on residents' health and well-being was considered.
