Dutch military helicopter exercises and public response

Overview

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has conducted various military helicopter operations across the country. Initial activities in Veldhoven involved Chinook and NH90 helicopters practicing medical transport and ‘unprepared landings’ in non-military locations. During this period, a Defence helicopter also assisted emergency services by detecting a forest fire near Waalwijk.

Later operations transitioned to large-scale anti-terror exercises in urban areas such as Rotterdam-Zuid and IJsselmonde. These exercises, which simulated hostage rescues using Chinook, Cougar, and Apache helicopters, drew significant public backlash. Residents reported being disturbed by heavy noise during early morning hours, leading to numerous official noise complaints. Political parties have since questioned the municipal government regarding the selection of densely populated residential areas for such training.
