Rotterdam The Hague Airport flight routes deviate due to Schiphol congestion

A report commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure reveals that aircraft departing from Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA) frequently deviate from prescribed flight routes, leading to increased noise pollution for residents in surrounding areas such as Rotterdam, Schiedam, and Spijkenisse.

To minimize noise, aircraft are instructed to follow specific routes up to 6,000 feet. However, the study by MovingDot found that 75 percent of flights on the northeast route and 56 percent on the southwest route deviate from these procedures before reaching that altitude. Approximately half of the flights on the ARNEM route also deviate early.

The report identifies Schiphol Airport as the primary cause of these deviations. To prevent conflicts with landing or departing traffic at Schiphol and to manage the busy RIVER traffic node, Rotterdam flights are regularly rerouted, making it difficult to adhere to original noise-mitigation plans.
