Round Hill Music sues Anthropic and Suno over AI copyright
Round Hill Music, an independent publisher with a $1.1 billion catalog, has filed copyright infringement lawsuits against AI companies Anthropic and Suno in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
The lawsuits allege that both companies ingested lyrics and musical compositions from at least 500 songs within Round Hill’s portfolio—including works by artists such as The Kinks, James Brown, and the Goo Goo Dolls—to train their respective AI models without authorization. Round Hill claims that Suno, an AI music generator, allegedly circumvented technological access controls and removed copyright management information to conceal its use of protected material.
While the initial complaints focus on 500 songs, the publisher stated it plans to amend the filings to potentially include 10,000 or more compositions. If successful, the total statutory damages sought could approach or exceed $1 billion. These legal actions join a growing wave of litigation from major music industry players targeting generative AI developers for the unauthorized use of copyrighted intellectual property.
