Round Table Conference anniversary marks Indonesian sovereignty milestone

August 23 marks the anniversary of the opening of the Round Table Conference (KMB) in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1949. This pivotal diplomatic event was organized to resolve the long-standing conflict between Indonesia and the Netherlands regarding the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty.

The conference involved three primary delegations: the Republic of Indonesia led by Vice President Mohammad Hatta, the Bijeenkomst voor Federaal Overleg (BFO) led by Sultan Hamid II, and the Dutch delegation led by J. H. van Maarseveen. The negotiations followed periods of military aggression and diplomatic pressure from the United Nations, including the formation of the United Nations Commission for Indonesia (UNCI).

While discussions were difficult regarding the status of West Irian and the assumption of former Dutch East Indies debts, the conference eventually led to the formal transfer of sovereignty on December 27, 1949. This transition established the United States of Indonesia (RIS) and concluded the Indonesian National Revolution.
