Rover launches initiative to map transport poverty in the Netherlands

The Dutch travelers' association Rover has launched a new initiative called ‘Van A naar Nergens’ (From A to Nowhere) to document transport poverty in the Netherlands. The campaign aims to collect reports from passengers who find public transport unreliable, inaccessible, or unaffordable.

According to Rover director Daan Zieren, transport poverty is not limited to rural areas. He noted that even if a bus stop is nearby, infrequent service or high costs can prevent public transport from being a viable alternative. Examples of these challenges include the need for taxis to reach hospitals, early departure times of the last buses, or stations being too far to walk to.

Rover intends to use these personal accounts to lobby national and provincial governments, arguing that reliable public transport should be treated as a basic necessity rather than a luxury. Following the reporting process, participants are also encouraged to sign a petition calling for increased investment in affordable and sustainable transportation.
