Rowan and Rutgers report high numbers of campus sexual assaults
Data released under the federal Clery Act reveals that Rowan University and Rutgers University-New Brunswick accounted for 133 reported rapes between 2022 and 2025. This figure represents over one-third of the 361 total on-campus sexual assaults reported across all 29 four-year colleges in New Jersey during the same period.
Spokespeople for both institutions stated that the higher numbers may reflect a culture where students feel more comfortable reporting incidents. Rowan University spokesman Jose Cardona noted that the school works to create an environment conducive to reporting, while Rutgers-New Brunswick requires incoming undergraduates to complete education on sexual and interpersonal violence, including consent and bystander intervention.
