US university sexual assault reporting trends
Overview
Reports regarding high volumes of sexual assault at various American universities have drawn attention following data releases under the federal Clery Act.
At the University of Utah, 146 rapes were reported in 2024. However, officials noted that 110 of these reports, along with 110 reports of dating violence, were linked to a single “multiple-month relationship plagued by interpersonal violence” between two students. Most of these incidents occurred in dormitories.
In New Jersey, Rowan University and Rutgers University-New Brunswick reported a combined 133 rapes between 2022 and 2025, accounting for more than one-third of all reported on-campus sexual assaults across 29 four-year colleges in the state. University spokespeople suggested these higher figures might reflect a culture where students feel more comfortable reporting incidents.
