Royal Swedish Opera to inaugurate Gasometer stage with new ballet
The Royal Swedish Opera will inaugurate its new main stage, the Gasometer, in Stockholm on April 9, 2027. The venue, located in Norra Djurgårdsstaden within a former gasometer, will accommodate over 1,500 spectators.
The opening will feature the world premiere of Alexander Ekman’s ballet, Lustra, a work exploring themes of desire, attraction, and human longing. Ekman described the piece as an attempt to translate lust and sex into a poetic form, moving away from clichés to explore darker, more surreal aspects of human connection.
The 2027 spring season also includes a production of Verdi’s Requiem directed by Örjan Andersson, featuring 150 performers, and a production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. This new programming period coincides with a five-year, 3.25 billion SEK renovation of the Royal Opera’s historic house at Gustav Adolfs torg.
