Le Civette nursing home faces closure amid Tuscany healthcare funding crisis

The RSA Le Civette nursing home in Florence is facing permanent closure due to financial instability. Valerio Mari, Director General of ASL Toscana Centro, stated the facility is “diseconomica” and requires 10 million euros for restructuring—funds that neither the ASL nor the Tuscany Region currently possess.

Of the 19 current residents, 11 have identified new facilities, while others face challenges regarding geriatric reassessment or acceptance of transfer. The closure has triggered labor unrest, with unions calling for institutional dialogue to protect jobs and ensure continuity of care for the elderly.

This situation highlights broader fiscal pressures within the Tuscan healthcare system. Regional President Eugenio Giani noted that the region faces a 200 million euro deficit linked to changes in car tax regulations, while Assessor Monia Monni reported a healthcare budget imbalance of 380 million euros. Monni indicated that investments have been postponed and hiring slowed to manage the deficit.
