Ørsted launches 250 MW Texas battery storage project
Ørsted has started commercial operations of the Old 300 Storage battery system in Needville, Texas. The utility‑scale installation delivers 250 MW of power for two hours (500 MWh) and is fully integrated into the ERCOT grid. It is co‑located with the 430 MW Old 300 Solar farm, though the two facilities operate independently.
The project uses Tesla Megapack units manufactured at the company’s Lathrop, California Megafactory. Ørsted estimates that the combined solar and storage sites will generate roughly $110 million in property‑tax revenue for local schools, infrastructure and emergency services. Melissa Peterson, president of Ørsted Americas Onshore, said the battery storage helps strengthen grid reliability during periods of tight supply and demand. The solar farm already supplies electricity to about 80,000 Texas homes and businesses.
