Energy storage project expansion in Texas
Overview
Energy companies are expanding battery storage capacity within the Texas ERCOT grid.
In August 2026, Ørsted commenced commercial operations of the Old 300 Storage battery system in Needville, Texas. The 250 MW/500 MWh installation uses Tesla Megapack units and is co-located with the company’s 430 MW Old 300 Solar farm. Ørsted Americas Onshore president Melissa Peterson noted that the storage system is intended to “strengthen grid reliability during periods of tight supply and demand.”
Following this, Equinor subsidiary East Point Energy completed construction of the Citrus Flatts facility in Harlingen, Texas. This 100 MW/200 MWh project marks the company’s fifth battery storage facility to enter commercial production in four years. The project operates on a merchant basis to supply electricity to the Texas energy market.
