Saudi Arabia postpones major sporting events following Houthi attacks

A series of security escalations in Saudi Arabia, including missile attacks attributed to the Houthi movement, has led to the postponement of several major international sporting events. A deadly strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh resulted in at least 12 deaths and over 300 injuries, prompting authorities to reassess regional stability.

Key sporting disruptions include the postponement of the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition tournament from October to December 27–30. The FIFAe Finals 2026 in Jeddah has also been delayed following security assessments, leading national esports teams from Japan and Brazil to withdraw from the competition. Additionally, the Saudi Professional League has rescheduled several matches, including a fixture featuring Al-Nassr, citing logistical challenges and security concerns.

Further uncertainty remains for the 2027 Asian Cup, which the Asian Football Confederation is monitoring, with potential postponement to 2028 if regional instability persists. The Asian Tour is also monitoring the situation ahead of the Saudi International golf tournament.
