RTVE launches Catalan-language channel 2Cat

RTVE has launched 2Cat, a television channel designed entirely in Catalan, following the high viewership figures of the regional public broadcaster TV3. Directed by Oriol Nolis, the channel has seen significant audience growth, supported by programming such as Gemma Nierga’s ‘Café d’idees’.

However, the channel's programming choices have drawn scrutiny, specifically regarding the replacement of Spanish-language films and documentaries that lack Catalan translations with Catalan-language series. This development has highlighted a perceived disparity between Catalonia and other Spanish regions with co-official languages, such as the Basque Country, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community, which have not seen similar expansions in dedicated linguistic broadcasting.
