RTVE programming updates and La 2Cat launch

Overview

RTVE is expanding its programming across various platforms. The public broadcaster launched new seasons for ‘RTVE Responde’, which features a renewed visual identity to address viewer inquiries, and ‘Objetivo Igualdad’, which is incorporating artificial intelligence to monitor social media trends regarding gender equality.

RTVE Catalunya has furthered its regional presence with the launch of La 2Cat, a channel designed entirely in Catalan. To mark the channel’s first anniversary, the 2026-2027 programming season was unveiled, set to launch on October 10. This season emphasizes regional identity, humor, and local stories through new programs such as ‘Catalunya fantàstica’, ‘Cervells mínims’, ‘Nous guerrers’—which commemorates the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death—and ‘Tot això eren camps’. The launch also includes a special anniversary broadcast featuring a concert by Oques Grasses.

While the channel has seen audience growth with programs like ‘Café d’idees’, its programming choices have faced scrutiny. Specifically, the replacement of Spanish-language films and documentaries that lack Catalan translations with Catalan-language series has highlighted a perceived disparity between Catalonia and other Spanish regions with co-official languages, such as the Basque Country, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community, which have not seen similar expansions in dedicated linguistic broadcasting.
