Ruby-throated hummingbirds begin fall migration

The fall migration of ruby-throated hummingbirds is currently underway across various regions, including the Hudson Valley in the Northeast and the Ark-La-Tex region in Louisiana. As these birds prepare for their journey south toward Mexico and Central America, experts are providing guidance on how to support them.

To assist migrating birds, the LSU AgCenter recommends maintaining backyard feeders with fresh nectar. A proper homemade mixture consists of one part white sugar to four parts water, boiled and cooled. Experts warn against using brown sugar, honey, or artificial sweeteners, as these can harm the birds. Feeders should be cleaned thoroughly and the nectar changed every one to three days to prevent spoilage.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, providing feeders will not prevent hummingbirds from migrating, but it does offer a vital energy source for the journey. Residents are advised not to remove feeders immediately after seeing the last bird, but rather to keep them up for several weeks to support late stragglers.
