Rudi Völler criticizes new FIFA international match calendar format

DFB Sporting Director Rudi Völler has criticized the new FIFA international match calendar format, specifically the extended autumn break featuring four consecutive matches. Völler expressed concern that the current structure is “not good” and urged FIFA or UEFA to reconsider the format. He suggested returning to the previous system or splitting the matches into two blocks of three games instead of one long block of four.

Völler noted that while the German national team managed the schedule by utilizing two different squads, many other nations lack such depth. He warned that the current format significantly increases the risk of player injuries, particularly during qualification periods.

In domestic football, Karlsruher SC faces a critical period following the long international break. After a five-game winless streak that saw them drop to the penultimate position in the 2. Bundesliga, the team is scheduled to play an away match against FC St. Pauli on October 11, 2026.
