Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi dies from heatstroke in Japan

Fijian professional rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has died at the age of 26 due to suspected severe heatstroke. Vunilagi, a back-row forward for the Japanese second-division club Kyuden Voltex (Kyushu KV), collapsed after a training session in Fukuoka on Monday, August 3, 2026.

At the time of the incident, temperatures in Fukuoka were reported to be approximately 35°C. Despite being hospitalized and receiving intensive medical treatment, he passed away on Friday, August 7. The club expressed that they were "devastated by this sudden news" and noted that Vunilagi had only recently joined the team after previously playing for Tokyo Sungoliath.

His death comes amid an intense heatwave in Japan, with some regions recording temperatures exceeding 40°C. Authorities reported that between July 20 and July 26, nearly 18,600 people were hospitalized for heatstroke in Japan, with 45 deaths recorded during that period. The tragedy has sparked renewed discussions regarding athlete safety protocols and the necessity of adjusting training and match schedules to mitigate the risks of extreme heat caused by climate change.
