Death of rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi in Japan

Fijian professional rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi died at age 26 following a suspected severe heatstroke. Vunilagi, a player for the Japanese second-division club Kyuden Voltex, collapsed after a training session in Fukuoka on August 3, 2026, during a period of intense heat in Japan. Despite receiving intensive medical treatment, he passed away on August 7.

Following a period of inactivity, Kyuden Voltex has announced the resumption of team practices. To prevent future incidents, the club is implementing new safety protocols, including the installation of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) monitors to be checked every 15 minutes. The team has established a policy to cancel or postpone activities if the WBGT index reaches 31 degrees Celsius.
