Rural Fire Service launches bushfire preparedness initiative

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) is launching its statewide ‘Get Ready’ initiative to prepare communities for the upcoming bushfire season, which officially begins on October 1. Local brigades will host community events, including ‘Get Ready Weekends’ in the Orana and New England regions, to provide residents with safety information, practical advice, and resources.

Superintendent Bron Waters noted that recent wet weather has led to significant vegetation growth, which increases fire risks as conditions become warmer and drier. RFS research indicates that while 70 per cent of people claim to have a bushfire plan, fewer than half have taken physical steps to prepare their properties, and 62 per cent are unaware of free RFS resources.

To mitigate risk, the RFS recommends households trim overhanging trees, mow grass, remove flammable items from near homes, clear gutters of debris, and ensure hoses are ready for use. Officials are also urging residents to develop bushfire survival plans, specifically discussing ‘trigger points’ for when to evacuate.
