The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) has initiated its ‘Get Ready’ program to prepare communities for the upcoming bushfire season, which is scheduled to begin on October 1.

Initial efforts focused on local preparedness events in the Mid Lachlan Valley, including sessions hosted by the Tottenham, Back Yamma, and Parkes Headquarters brigades. These events allow residents to consult with volunteers regarding Bush Fire Survival Plans and the Australian Fire Danger Rating System.

The initiative has expanded to a statewide level, with ‘Get Ready Weekends’ scheduled in the Orana and New England regions. Superintendent Bron Waters highlighted that recent wet weather has caused significant vegetation growth, increasing fire risks as weather patterns shift toward warmer, drier conditions.

Data from the RFS indicates a gap in practical readiness; while 70 per cent of residents claim to have a plan, fewer than half have taken physical steps to prepare their properties. Consequently, the RFS is providing guidance on property maintenance—such as clearing gutters and trimming trees—and urging residents to establish ‘trigger points’ for evacuation.
