Rural pharmacies strengthen healthcare access in Spain

Community pharmacies in rural Spain are playing an increasingly vital role in maintaining healthcare equity amidst challenges of depopulation and geographic dispersion. In Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha, the pharmacy sector has strengthened its position as a key healthcare provider. The MediCAMProx project has successfully enabled 742 patients in depopulated areas to receive hospital-dispensed medications locally, avoiding unnecessary travel to hospitals.

Advancements in Albacete include increased digitalization through electronic prescriptions and the integration of new labor mutuals. Meanwhile, in León, Castilla y León, pharmacies serve as essential healthcare hubs where residents can seek advice without appointments. In areas where medical center hours are limited, pharmacies provide continuous access to professionals. The regional pharmacy council has launched the campaign ‘Rural pharmacy. Much more than rural cohesion’ to highlight how these establishments act as primary healthcare resources for aging populations in dispersed territories.
