Rural Spain addresses depopulation through housing and entrepreneurship

Stakeholders in Spain's rural sectors are addressing the challenges of depopulation and economic sustainability. During a roundtable discussion in León, local mayors identified housing access, employment opportunities, and basic services as the primary obstacles to attracting and retaining new residents in rural municipalities.

Mayors from Sena de Luna, Pajares de los Oteros, and Fresno de la Vega emphasized that while tourism and agriculture are vital, they must be paired with stable jobs and improved communications to ensure long-term viability. In Sena de Luna, for example, efforts to balance tourism with livestock farming aim to offset the economic loss caused by the closure of local mines.

In a related effort to bolster rural economies, the supermarket chain Gadis is highlighting the role of female entrepreneurship through its 5th Rural Women's Forum. The initiative focuses on supporting local female suppliers to promote generational renewal and socioeconomic diversification. The company noted that integrating technology and innovation into traditional sectors, such as dairy, is essential for the future of rural communities.
