Russia aims to triple fishing volumes in African waters

Russia is projecting a significant expansion of its fishing operations across the African coast. Official expectations from the Kremlin involve tripling the current extraction of bio-resources in African waters to reach 300,000 tons in the medium term. Currently, Russian fishing volumes stand at approximately 100,293 tons, according to data from the FAO and the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo).

The fleet utilizes various vessels, many of which are legacy Soviet-era ships from the Pulkovskiy Meridian and Moonzund series. While some vessels still fly the Russian flag, many operate under different national flags, such as Belize or São Tomé and Príncipe, to maintain presence along the African coastline. This expansion comes as the European Union's fishing fleet faces potential expulsion from certain regions.
