Russia expansion of economic interests in Africa

Overview

Russia is pursuing expanded commercial and resource interests across the African continent. In the maritime sector, the Kremlin aims to triple its extraction of bio-resources in African waters, targeting a medium-term volume of 300,000 tons. Current volumes stand at approximately 100,293 tons, according to data from the FAO and the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo).

Agricultural trade continues to grow, with Russia shipping 13 million tons of wheat to Africa in the first nine months of 2026. This follows the export of over 18 million tons of cereals in 2025. Russian wheat is supplied to more than 40 nations, capturing roughly one-third of the continent’s market. In South Africa, agricultural exports from Russia exceeded $54 million during the same nine-month period in 2026, driven primarily by wheat, instant coffee, and millet. Mineral fertilizer exports also rose from 1.5 million tons in 2025 to over 2.2 million tons in 2026. Ahead of the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov highlighted the increasing importance of the African market, where total trade volume exceeded $27 billion in 2025.

Resource and industrial cooperation is also intensifying. In Mali, the state-owned company Rosgeologiya has signed an agreement to produce geological maps covering more than half of the country to identify mineral zones, including lithium. Meanwhile, Egypt is advancing feasibility studies for a logistics hub for grains and vegetable oils to serve as a trade gateway between Russia and Africa. This project aims to integrate trading, storage, and food processing activities, potentially leveraging investment from BRICS nations.
