Russia and Ghana expand trade and legal cooperation

Russia and Ghana are working to expand their bilateral relationship through increased trade and enhanced security and legal cooperation. Bilateral trade between the two nations has grown significantly, rising from US$247 million in 2022 to over US$850 million in 2025. Discussions between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa focused on transitioning from a commodity-based exchange toward deeper investments in mining, energy, infrastructure, and logistics.

On the legal front, Russian Ambassador to Ghana Andrei Ordash addressed the high-profile case of Vladislav Aleksandrovich Liulkov, a Russian national accused of secretly filming Ghanaian women. Ordash stated that the matter remains a priority for Russian law enforcement and reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to cooperating with Ghanaian authorities. The incident has highlighted the necessity for both nations to establish a formal extradition agreement to govern legal cooperation and the apprehension of suspects.
