Russia and Ukraine escalate drone and missile warfare

A massive escalation in aerial warfare has occurred between Russia and Ukraine, marked by large-scale drone strikes and retaliatory missile attacks. Ukraine launched one of its most significant drone offensives to date, targeting the Moscow region with at least 600 drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down 822 drones across the country. In response, Russia intensified missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, including Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy, causing multiple deaths and injuries.

Ukraine has also claimed to have disrupted the logistics of Wildberries, a major Russian retailer, by disabling seven of its ten largest centers. Amidst the conflict, concerns regarding hybrid warfare are rising in Europe. A Spanish F-18 aircraft operating under NATO air police intercepted and shot down a suspected Russian drone in Romanian airspace. Similar incidents involving drones have been reported in Germany and Latvia, fueling fears of destabilization efforts targeting NATO members.

In response to the ongoing aggression, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced plans to increase the number of sanctioned Russian individuals and entities by one-third this autumn, describing it as the most ambitious sanctions list since the start of the war.
