Russia and U.S. energy deals spark criticism of European policy
Russian intelligence and officials have criticized European leadership following a recent diesel supply agreement between the United States and Russia. Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy for the Russian Presidency, defended the pact signed by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, stating that opponents of the deal fail to recognize its economic and peace-building benefits.
In response to the deal, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused the European Union of hypocrisy, noting that while the EU criticizes Washington for commercial deals with Moscow, European nations continue to spend billions on Russian energy resources. Donald Trump also addressed the matter, claiming the EU remains a major purchaser of Russian energy despite its stance.
Separately, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused the European Commission of conducting a defamation campaign against the state corporation Rosatom. The SVR alleged that European officials are attempting to force Rosatom out of markets like Hungary to favor Western companies, claiming European producers are unable to compete fairly in the nuclear energy sector.
