Russia-EU energy and nuclear sector tensions
Overview
Tensions have escalated between Russia and the European Union regarding energy cooperation and market competition. Following a diesel supply agreement between the United States and Russia, Russian officials and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized European leadership, with Bessent accusing the EU of hypocrisy for continuing to spend billions on Russian energy resources while criticizing Washington’s commercial deals with Moscow.
Simultaneously, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused the European Commission of conducting a defamation campaign against the state corporation Rosatom. The SVR alleges that European officials are attempting to pressure the Hungarian government to abandon the €12.5 billion Paks II nuclear power plant project in favor of Western suppliers. Moscow claims that European producers cannot compete fairly in the nuclear sector and warns that replacing the Russian contractor could result in higher costs and increased security risks.
