Germany and Russia arrest individuals on espionage and mercenary charges

German authorities have arrested a Ukrainian national in Brandenburg on suspicion of spying for Russian intelligence. The individual is accused of gathering military information regarding tank production, ammunition, explosives, and NATO's eastern flank security. Prosecutors allege the suspect used contacts within the European defense industry to obtain intelligence.

Separately, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the detention of a German national accused of mercenary activity. The man, a former Bundeswehr soldier with combat experience in Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria, reportedly served as a sniper for Ukraine's territorial defense between 2016 and 2018. The FSB claims he signed a new three-year contract in late 2025 but deserted after failing to receive promised wages. The German Foreign Ministry is currently working to clarify the facts of the arrest.

In the Philippines, officials are investigating reports of illegal recruitment involving Filipino nationals being drawn into the conflict in Ukraine. The Department of Migrant Workers is probing cases where citizens were allegedly recruited for security roles in Russia, following reports that at least three Filipinos have been killed while fighting in the Donetsk region.
