Russia Boosts Black Sea Ship Protection Amid Ukraine Conflict

Russia announced on 3 August that it is strengthening protection for cargo vessels in the Azov‑Black Sea basin and is developing alternative transport routes. The Russian Transport Ministry said a special task force will seek new logistics solutions and shift cargo flows to other modes, while the Defence Ministry is adding measures to ensure navigational safety. Several stevedoring firms have pledged to handle extra cargo volumes at their terminals.

The move follows a sharp escalation of drone attacks on ships by both sides in the war with Ukraine. Russia’s main grain lobby warned that Ukrainian attacks on Russian ports could halt Black Sea grain exports, pushing wheat prices higher and threatening food supplies in Africa and the Middle East. Ukraine’s largest farming union likewise warned that Russian strikes near Odesa are restricting Ukrainian grain shipments during the harvest season, with potential global food‑security impacts.
