Russia christens nuclear submarine K-563 Uljanowsk

On 28 July 2026, the Russian shipyard OAO PO Severodvinsk in Severodvinsk held a christening ceremony for the new nuclear‑powered multi‑role submarine K‑563 Uljanowsk. The vessel belongs to the project 885M (Jasień‑M) class and was built over nine years, with its keel laid on 28 July 2017.

The submarine, 139.5 m long and displacing 8 600 t on the surface and 13 800 t submerged, will undergo sea‑trial testing before being commissioned into the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet, specifically the 10th Submarine Division at Wiluzhinsk, by December 2027. Senior officials attending the ceremony included Vice‑Premier and Far Eastern Federal District presidential envoy Yuriy Trutnev, Navy commander Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, and regional ministers.

K‑563 Uljanowsk will join the Northern and Pacific Fleets’ growing fleet of Jasien‑M submarines, enhancing Russia’s under‑sea capabilities with increased automation and reduced crew requirements.
