Russia's Yasen‑M submarine Ulyanovsk

Entities: Russian Navy · Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev · Ulyanovsk (submarine) · Pacific Fleet · Northern Fleet

Overview

On 28 July 2026 Russia held a ceremony in Severodvinsk to mark the completion of the new nuclear‑powered attack submarine Ulyanovsk (project 885M, hull number K‑563). The vessel, whose keel was laid on 28 July 2017, measures roughly 130‑140 metres in length and displaces about 8,600 tonnes on the surface and 13,800 tonnes submerged. It is equipped with a next‑generation KTP‑6 reactor, giving it speeds over 31 knots and a test depth of around 520 metres.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials including Vice‑Premier Yuriy Trutnev, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev and regional ministers. After the launch, the submarine will undergo fitting‑out, dockside tests and sea‑trial evaluations, with full weapons and navigation checks slated for completion by December 2027. Sources differ on its eventual fleet assignment: one report links the boat to the Pacific Fleet’s 10th Submarine Division at Wiluzhinsk, while another indicates it will join the Northern Fleet for multipurpose missions such as anti‑submarine warfare, surface‑ship attack and land‑target strikes. Commissioning is expected by the end of 2027.
