Russia: Citizens form local patrols to resist forced military recruitment

Residents in parts of Russia are forming local volunteer patrols to defend against forced military recruitment. In the Penza Oblast, specifically in the village of Bashmakovo, citizens have organized via WhatsApp to monitor streets for unmarked vehicles used by recruiters who reportedly use lists to target and forcibly conscript men.

While regional authorities deny these raids, eyewitnesses describe instances where men were taken by force and later sent to serve in occupied territories like Mariupol. This local resistance follows widespread anxiety across the country regarding potential mass mobilization.

Despite rumors circulating that a new wave of mobilization could follow upcoming parliamentary elections, President Vladimir Putin has dismissed such reports as “absolute nonsense” and an “information attack against Russia.” However, the fear of conscription continues to drive citizens to seek ways to avoid service, including fleeing the country or withdrawing funds from bank accounts.
