Russia closes German Consulate in Saint Petersburg and Goethe-Institut centers
Russia has announced the closure of the German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg and the cessation of activities for all Goethe-Institut cultural centers within Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the consulate must cease operations by September 18, 2026, and all employees must depart the country by that date. Goethe-Institut staff have been ordered to leave Russia by September 13, 2026.
These measures are framed as retaliation for Germany’s recent decisions to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. The diplomatic escalation follows an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August, where an explosives-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian transport aircraft. German authorities have officially attributed the drone incident to Russia, a claim Moscow categorically denies, labeling the accusations as unfounded provocations.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has characterized the situation as the “beginning of a real war,” accusing Berlin of escalating bilateral relations. The dispute marks a significant deepening of tensions between Moscow and Berlin, involving both diplomatic representations and cultural institutions.
