Russia confirms recruitment of Peruvian nationals for Ukraine conflict

The Russian government has acknowledged the recruitment of Peruvian nationals to serve in its military during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Following reports and meetings involving the Peruvian Foreign Ministry and the Russian Embassy, Moscow stated that the recruits were aware of the risks and voluntarily signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense.

The Russian Embassy denied allegations that citizens were deceived or forced into service, asserting that all signatories were capable and understood the terms, conditions, and associated risks of military service. Moscow expressed appreciation for the contribution of Peruvian nationals participating in what it terms the ‘Special Military Operation’ and stated it is addressing Peruvian requests regarding individual citizens.

According to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, 459 Peruvians have enlisted in Russia. Of these, 11 deaths have been confirmed, 114 are missing, three have been captured by the Ukrainian army, and 31 were evacuated from Russia, with 28 having returned to Peru.
