Russia demands UN investigation into alleged torture of POWs in Ukraine
Rodion Miroshnik, the Special Envoy for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has called for an international investigation into the treatment of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting, Miroshnik alleged that released prisoners have described being subjected to “medieval” torture methods.
According to the testimonies cited by Miroshnik, these abuses include the use of torture racks, branding with hot irons, the amputation of limbs, and the carving of Nazi symbols into bodies. He further claimed that prisoners were held in a network of “secret prisons” near the front lines, where they were deprived of basic necessities such as adequate food and water.
Miroshnik urged human rights organizations and international missions to gain access to facilities in Ukrainian-controlled territory to conduct exhaustive investigations into these claims.
