Geran-5 jet drones challenge Ukrainian air defenses

Russia has deployed advanced Geran-5 jet-powered drones in its aerial campaign against Ukraine, significantly challenging existing air defense systems. Unlike previous models, the Geran-5 can reach speeds of 450–600 km/h, reducing the reaction window for defense crews to as little as 10 to 15 seconds.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that air defense forces are currently intercepting only 57% of these jet drones, a notable decrease from the 90% or higher success rate seen with conventional Shahed-style drones. The increased speed and higher flight altitudes of the Geran-5 have rendered some older interception systems less effective.

The Geran-5 K5 variant features an autonomous optical navigation system called Susanin, which uses Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation (DSMAC) to allow the drone to continue its flight even if satellite signals are jammed. The drone is estimated to have a takeoff mass of approximately 850 kilograms and a range of up to 1,000 kilometers.

Economically, the frequent air raid alarms caused by these attacks are estimated to cost the Ukrainian economy $45 million for every hour of business shutdown. Meanwhile, Russia is reportedly producing approximately 3,000 Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones monthly and has begun marketing an export version, the Geran-A1E, to international markets.
