Russia deploys jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles in Ukraine
Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine, utilizing a combination of ballistic missiles and new jet-powered drones. On September 12, 2026, a massive night attack involved 129 drones and dozens of missiles targeting southern Ukraine. While Ukrainian forces intercepted six of eight Kalibr cruise missiles, they were unable to intercept any ballistic missiles, which struck energy infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih.
Reports indicate that the introduction of jet-powered drones, such as the Geran-4, is significantly altering the conflict. These drones can reach speeds of approximately 600 km/h, allowing them to outrun many existing interceptors and overwhelm air defense systems. This technological shift has increased the frequency of air raid alerts in major cities like Kyiv, creating a continuous threat to civilian populations.
In response to the strikes, Ukraine launched a counter-offensive drone operation involving up to 300 drones directed deep into Russian territory, though approximately 230 were intercepted. On the ground, military movements continue in the Kharkiv and Dobropillia directions, with reports of Russian forces capturing settlements and threatening key logistics routes.
