Russia deploys urban air defenses amid surge in Ukrainian drone attacks
Russia is increasingly integrating air defense systems into its urban landscapes to counter Ukrainian drone and missile strikes. In Moscow, Pantsir short-range air defense systems have been deployed on busy highways near strategic oil refineries and on the rooftops of vital government buildings. This shift in urban air defense doctrine includes utilizing high-altitude cranes and civilian infrastructure like flyovers to improve radar line-of-sight against low-flying threats.
In the Kursk border region, Russian forces reported intercepting nearly 200 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour period. These cross-border attacks resulted in one civilian death and several injuries, alongside damage to homes, shops, and vehicles. This surge in drone activity follows previous large-scale strikes targeting Moscow and other Russian territories during recent parliamentary elections.
