Ukraine protests removal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov

President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov after a six‑month tenure, citing a clash with Armed Forces Commander‑in‑Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi over reforms and procurement. The firing sparked large‑scale demonstrations in Kyiv and dozens of other Ukrainian cities. Thousands of citizens, soldiers, veterans and civic groups gathered, waving flags and chants such as “Bring Fedorov back” and “Remove Syrskyi,” demanding the minister’s reinstatement and criticizing the perceived slowdown of military modernization, especially the drone programme and anti‑corruption procurement reforms championed by Fedorov.

The protests have put pressure on Zelensky, who has indicated he is weighing the possible dismissal of Syrskyi as well. While some foreign officials say the personnel change will not affect support for Ukraine, analysts warn that internal discord could hinder ongoing reforms vital to the war effort. The unrest continues to draw participants across the country, highlighting a deep political rift within Ukraine’s defence establishment amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
