Russia digital ruble accounts reach 270,000

Russia’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble, has seen a rapid initial uptake, with account numbers reaching 270,000 less than two months after its national launch on September 1. This figure significantly exceeds the Bank of Russia’s initial expectations.

Of the total accounts, approximately 15,000 belong to legal entities and individual entrepreneurs, with small and medium-sized enterprises showing notable interest. While the number of accounts has grown quickly, officials have not yet released data regarding actual transaction volumes or the number of truly active users.

Looking ahead, Moscow is planning to introduce recurring payments in November, with offline transaction capabilities projected for 2027. Despite the surge in account openings, some financial institutions, including Sberbank, have expressed skepticism regarding widespread adoption and meaningful interest from private or corporate clients.
