Russia engages in diplomatic efforts between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Russian officials have conducted high-level meetings in both Pakistan and Afghanistan amid escalating tensions between Islamabad and Kabul. On October 14, Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev met with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Rawalpindi to discuss regional security and mutual interests.

Simultaneously, Sergey Naryshkin, director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), traveled to Kabul to meet with the Taliban’s intelligence chief, Abdul Haq Wasiq. While previous mediation attempts by Qatar, Turkey, and China have struggled to halt cross-border violence and air strikes, Moscow has signaled a willingness to act as a peace broker.

Russia’s special representative for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, stated that Moscow is prepared to mediate if requested by both sides. While Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia indicated that Islamabad had approached Moscow, the Taliban has not yet publicly requested Russian mediation.
