Russia escalates air war on Ukraine with jet-powered drones

Russia has entered a new phase of its air campaign against Ukraine, characterized by the increased use of jet-powered drones designed to evade existing air defense systems. These drones are reportedly faster than previous propeller-driven models and are being used to conduct continuous, round-the-clock strikes on civilian targets.

Data from Ukrainian officials indicates a significant escalation in the deployment of these jet drones. In July 2026, approximately 1,500 were launched, increasing to 2,850 in August, and reaching roughly 3,200 in September. This surge is part of a broader strategy to target critical infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, power grids, and transport hubs, particularly in Kyiv, to disrupt the country's ability to function as winter approaches.

Recent air strikes have resulted in casualties across several regions. In Kremenchuk, at least two people were killed and seven injured, while a strike in Priluki reportedly killed four people and injured 20. The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that its forces successfully neutralized 44 missiles and 117 drones during recent waves of attacks.
