Russia expands mining and trade influence in Africa
Russia is intensifying its presence in Africa through strategic mining and trade agreements. In Mali, the state-owned geological company Rosgeologiya, via its unit Zarubezhgeologia, has signed an agreement with Mali’s Ministry of Mines. The deal involves producing geological maps for areas covering more than half of Mali’s territory to identify promising zones for mineral exploration, including lithium. The partnership also includes developing a digital system for managing geological data, mineral licenses, and mining oversight.
Simultaneously, Kenya is seeking to strengthen economic ties with Russia, following trade that reached $380 million in 2025. Kenya has invited Russian investors to explore opportunities in mining, mineral processing, transport, engineering, and manufacturing. The Kenyan government aims to leverage Russian expertise in energy and fertilizer production to support its industrialization and agricultural goals.
